How To Install Pavers Outline an area 6" larger than the actual finished dimensions of your patio, drive or walkway. Remove soil to a depth of 6". Spread a 2-4" layer of paver base throughout project area and tamp with a shovel or tamper. Spread an inch of paver sand over the project area. Level the sand by laying two 1" pipes parallel and dragging a 2x4 across the pipes. Shift the pipes and 2x4 as necessary to level the entire area. With barrier edge as a guide, lay pavers in the pattern of your choice. Once pavers are in place, sweep sand into cracks between pieces to lock them in place. (Do not use mortar or cement.)
